We received your query regarding changing your Zakaat year. Our response is as follows:

One of the conditions of Zakaat is that the wealth equal to Nisaab must be in the person’s ownership for one lunar year[1]. The Zakaat year does not change unless all your wealth is depleted, in other words your wealth reaches zero. Thereafter when the wealth reaches the Nisaab (threshold) then your lunar year will begin again. If ones wealth decreases during the course of the year, and it increases again to the value of Nisaab by the end of the year the Zakaat must be calculated on the full amount that is possessed at the end of the year. Fluctuations in the course of the year are to be disregarded.[2]

It is important to note that Zakaat is calculated according to the lunar calendar and not the Gregorian calendar[3] the reason being is that a lunar year has approximately 354 days. A solar year has 365 days. This leaves an 11-day difference between one solar year and one lunar year. Over the course of 33 years, there will be a lag of one year between solar and lunar[4]. Therefore if a person calculates his Zakaat according to the Gregorian calendar then over the course of 33 years there will be a shortfall of 1 year of Zakaat. Thus, in your case you will need to find out which Islaamic months it was on the November in which you become the owner of gold equal to the Nisaab (Threshold) and every year you will calculate your Zakaat on that particular Islaamic month.
