Home > Q&A > Beliefs > keeping children indoors at the time of sunset

Asslaamulaikaum: we heard people telling us that we must not take our baby out at the time of Maghrib. Can you please clarify if this has any basis in Islaam?

السلام عليكم ورحمة الله وبركاته

حامدًا وّمصليًا وّمسلمًا

In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

Jaabir Radiallaahu Anhu narrates that Rasulullaah Salallaahu Alaihi Wasallam said “when the night approaches then hold back your children because the Shayaateen roam about freely at this time then when a portion of the night has passed then you may let them out and close your doors and remember Allaah, extinguish the lamps and remember Allaah, tie the water bags and remember Allaah, cover the utensils and remember Allaah even if something is placed over it horizontally”. {Bukhaari vol. 1 pg. 463-464, # 3174}

Similarly in another Hadith Rasulullaah Salallaahu Alaihi Wasallam has advised us: “cover the utensils, tie the water bags, close the doors of the home and bring the children indoors at night as this is the time when mischievous jinns roam about freely and catch the children.” {Bukhaari vol. 1 pg. 467, #3206}

Thus it is advisable that children should be kept indoors at the time of sunset (before and after) as this is the time when mischievous Jinns roam around.

And Allaah Ta’ala knows best
